Tools and Materials Needed

• Socket set
• Brake pad spreader/ C-clamp

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface and set the parking brake to ensure that it does not move during the process.
2. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels for added safety.
3. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels but do not fully remove them yet. You'll need the tires to be somewhat secure while you use your breaker bar.

Raising the Vehicle

1. Use a jack to lift the front of the car. Consult the owner's manual for recommended jacking points to avoid damaging the vehicle's structure.
2. Once elevated, place jack stands under the car for added security before lowering the jack slightly so the car rests on the stands.

Removing the Wheel

1. Fully remove the lug nuts and carefully take off the wheel, exposing the brake caliper and rotor.

Removing the Brake Caliper

1. Locate the brake caliper and use a socket wrench to remove the bolts securing it. These bolts are usually found at the back of the caliper.
2. Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Ensure that you don't let it hang by the brake line as this can cause damage. Secure it with a piece of wire or rest it on the suspension.

Removing the Old Brake Pads

1. Slide out the old brake pads from the caliper bracket. Note their orientation to ensure the new pads are installed correctly.
2. Inspect the caliper bracket and hardware for any visible signs of wear or damage, replacing as necessary.

Installing the New Brake Pads

1. Apply a thin layer of anti-squeal lubricant to the backing plate of the new pads. This helps minimize noise when braking.
2. Position the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same way the old pads were oriented.

Reassembling the Brake Caliper

1. Before placing the caliper back over the new brake pads, use a brake pad spreader or C-clamp to compress the caliper piston. Be sure to check the brake fluid reservoir, as compressing the piston will cause the fluid level to rise.
2. Once the piston is compressed, slide the caliper back onto the rotor and secure it with the previously removed bolts. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque settings as outlined in the vehicle’s manual.

Reinstalling the Wheel

1. Position the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to ensure even tightening.
2. Use the torque wrench to securely tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer's recommended specifications.

Lowering the Vehicle and Final Checks

1. Remove the jack stands and slowly lower the vehicle using the jack.
2. Remove the wheel chocks and double-check that all fasteners are properly tightened.
3. Start the car and gently pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure the brakes are functioning correctly and set properly against the rotor.
4. Check the brake fluid reservoir and add fluid if necessary.

Your brake pad replacement is now complete. Always test the brakes at a low speed in a safe area to ensure proper operation before normal driving.
